i have a 2005 prius that is in major need of a nav update. I just called the dealer, and they mentioned that the newest version is arriving on nov 1st ($169) and that the current version is on sale ($139). Should I save the $30 with the older version or go with the newest one? Thoughts?
Well - my thought is that you should use the money to buy an add-on GPS unit that will have a more accurate map and probably offer lifetime map database updates at no additional charge. However if you must continue use of the factory-installed GPS, then it's up to you whether the $30 savings is worth your having to use the older map database.
Hmm, that's an interesting perspective. I use my iphone for the addresses the nav can't find, I just prefer the sleekness of the in-dash system.
Ask the dealer for the update information for each of the updates. It will give you the details of the changes state-by-state. Then you can decide if the latest update is worth the $30. I am like you that I like the built in GPS over external devices and cables. The Toyota GPS can't match Garmin features but mine has always gotten me from point A to B.
If you get the older version how will you feel the first time that you have an issue with it being outdated?
You could view this in a couple of ways - you can offset the high cost for the update of an average to good inbuilt system to maintain the current cabin "look". Or buy a cheaper, arguably better off the shelf GPS unit that you can update at your leisure/cost and which is transferable to a new vehicle or can itself be sold if no longer required. Also, if you are going to update at the full cost, you may as well go with the top spec available, or it negates your very reason for wanting accurate maps. Just my opinion.
