I took my 2007 Prius in to the dealer today and they said I need my muffler, exhaust pipe and gasket replaced. They quoted me a price of $492! I took my car over to a locally owned exhaust place and the guy told me they could custom build the repair for $200. My question is: Is there anything special about the Prius exhaust system? Is there any reason I shouldn't go with an aftermarket muffler from a dependable local garage? I've searched the web but I really haven't found an answer. Any insight would be appreciated!
It depend on how long you want to keep the car. The OEM muffler and exhaust pipe is part of the emissions system according to the EPA. It has to last as long as the EPA required warranty period. It is made of probably 409 stainless steel. A lower grade, but still stainless steel. The muffler shop will install all of this components or less expensive and shorter life aluminized mild steel.
