I have a new to me 2017 Prime Advanced. My garage has a tanning bed that isn’t being used anymore and it has this setup. What can I do to take advantage of this and get Level 2 charging speeds?
It appears from the plug that there is 240v, 1 phase power to that spot. Put a dryer outlet there and build/buy an adapter and run your stock LVSE from that. 2.5 hour charges await.
Some further advice: Don’t remove the NEMA 5-15P plug from the Toyota charging cable supplied with the car; it has a built-in temperature sensor. Use of locking (L__-__) receptacle outlets for EV charging is prohibited by the National Electrical Code, though some jurisdictions have not adopted this provision. See 625.44 in the 2017 edition published by NFPA, kindly quoted in a previous thread by @Old Bear, for the types of straight-blade receptacles that are allowed.
Yep... OP, do this for the win ! Either spend ~$20 dollars & build your own, or spend ~$50 dollars for a pre-made Pigtail, then use your OE Toyota EVSE unit at 240 volts. A full charge will take 2.5 hrs or less, your OE Toyota EVSE is a Dual Voltage unit. Rob43
Be sure the transformer is NOT in the circuit! We did not get to see which breaker in the service box powers this circuit, I am assuming it is a 30 Amp breaker. I like the first option, fewer wire junctions to fail. You can check this L6-30P with an ohmmeter before assembly. Green wire is the complex shape terminal. White wire is either unconnected or connected to ground Red and Black connect to the other two terminals. On the 5-20R, Green wire is ground, there will be a green screw on the receptacle. White wire is Neutral, you leave it protected, but unconnected. Red and Black are the 240 'Hot' wires, you will attach them to the silver screw and the brass one. I cannot find a picture of the inside of the 5-20R, I find this which claims it is well marked. What the heck are you talking about ?? This thread is dealing with a L6-30 which is a 3 wire receptacle or plug, Not a 4 wire like your stated green, white, red, & black wire. Rob43

(I am old, I feel sure a young person could see that on my phone) So i was all wrong! New try: On the L6-30P: Green wire is the complex shape terminal. So I built this and I have used it a couple days. Working great, but I think I’m going to change the 5/20R end. It was extremely tedious connecting the wires to it because the wires were way bigger than the receiver was intended. I don’t trust the finished product for the long run, so I’m going to get a bigger/better end. The whole thing works fine though, a little over 2 hours full charge.
First, congrats on your success ! Post up a few pics of your setup in my thread for everyone to see. A lot of these 5-20R's can Not accept a big wire, I had to search to find the one's that take a 10 AWG wire. The yellow Bryant brand 5-20R I use in my thread is actually designed to take a 10 AWG wire. Now that you've done it once, take it back apart & do it again if you need to make adjustments, it's easier the second time around.
