Hello All, As a new owner of a 2010 Toyota Prius III Hybrid I will like to know more maintenance information on how to keep my used Toyota Prius running with no major issues. This is my first Toyota Prius, but have been a loyal Toyota Enthusiast all my life. I have own two other Toyota vehicles, which are a 2010 Toyota Tacoma and 2016 Toyota Camry SE Special Edition which are pristine condition. I bought the Prius on Friday for my son who will be graduating and going to school in Southern California. The car I purchased has relatively low miles (81,000 to be exact). I purchased the car from the original owner per the car fax report, but the owner had no maintenance records but the Jiffy Lube sticker's on the front windshield. The car runs perfectly fine, is very fuel efficient, but tends to pull a little to the right and tires need to be replaced. I did experience a headlight issue already, but will take it to Toyota on Saturday to have the issue repairs per the extended technical service Bulletin for headlights. I am new to the forum, and have read many post in which owners complain about excessive oil consumption, is this something I should worry about on my new Prius? What other common problems should I be aware of, to make my new(used) last a very long time?
Welcome! All of the maintenance videos are on our YouTube channel. Let’s hope your 2010 doesn’t have any major issues down the line.
There is no way of knowing if your 2010 will experience any oil consumption issues. It's true that some 2010's suffer from this when they reached 100K miles or so, consuming a quart per 1K miles. Here's hoping that yours is not one of them. The best advice is to check your oil level often once a week. This action will determine whether your engine consumes oil and at what rate.
Examine the rubber surround on the moon roof and deflector. Some owners have experienced peeling and or degrading.
Instruct your son to check the oil level at every fill up. At 81k miles, there shouldn't be an oil consumption problem and even if there is, just top off oil as needed. Buy new tires, get the alignment adjusted, change the engine and cabin air filter, and make sure your son says thank you for the awesome gift.
Thank you all for amazing recommendations. I completed all of the recommendations mentioned in the post and so far my son is loving the car. I am continously monitoring the car's performance and oil once a week and so far we have not had any issues. Toyota is scheduled to install the low beam headlight wiring kit next week since the wiring harness were on back order. Again thank you all for your input.
