62MPG rating is according to EU estimates. Previous A3 2.0 TDI was EPA rated 30MPG city, 42MPG Hwy Expert Reviews - 2011 Audi A3 2.0 TDI Premium Clean Diesel S tronic - Yahoo! Autos Since it may deliver 12% improvement in consumption, maybe 35MPG city 48MPG Hwy EPA rating should be expected.
I don't think it makes sense to compare the past generation A3 2.0 TDI with the new generation A3 1.6 TDI
It helps to compare the ratio of euro tests to EPA tests. Then again with the prius c it didn't work. Euro tests for the prius c beat the prius, but they tied in EPA. Either way the new A3 1.6 TDI will be a very efficient car. Just not quite as efficient as a prius.
