I know some of you are fans of LED bulbs. CREE has hot new bulb on the market. The word is Home Depot has a very cheap price (~$10) due to exclusive deal with CREE. So you probably want to get at Home Depot. Sounds like Philips has some competition. The CREE has 6 and 9.5 Watt versions, dimmable. Very nice. LED is what I am replacing things with now, but I have only put them outside in the floodlights where the CFL's take too long to warm up in sub-zero weather. LEDs are instant and bright. My CFLs are lasting the stated time, I've never had to replace one in my house yet from burning out. I smashed one on the top of a floor lamp into the ceiling when carrying it from a room with vaulted ceilings to a hallway. Other than that, they work great.
Went to Home Depot yesterday and they had these bulbs $10 for 6 watt (40 watt equiv) and $13 for 9.5 Watt (60 watt equiv) plus they were announcing it on the PA system. I did not buy if they are good for outside I have use there.
Thanks has anyone tried this brand? How is the quality of light. I may replace one bulb that's outlet tends to kill bulbs easily.
I've almost run out of light bulbs to replace with LED versions. The future has already arrived for me. It's going to be a LONG time before I need to try out any newer LED bulbs.
. . . . . . they're dimable too. Of COURSE i just had to buy one . . . . several weeks ago for THIRTY BUCKS ... prior to the price cut. sigh . . . . oh well Their color rendition is great ... they put out tons of light, so time to get some more.
I have not been universally impressed with the CFL bulbs. EDN had an article about 'weak' capacitors being the cause. The worst performing ones are candelabra base and we are already down to the last two but the LED versions continue to work well. I've ordered a case of 6500K, candelabra base, LED replacements. If they show the same reliability and light output as the current 'warm light' bulbs, we'll be very happy. They are also half the price of candelabra, CFL bulbs like the ones that have failed. I stopped by Home Depot today to check out the 'under $10' CREE. Unfortunately, it's only a 40 watt equivilent, and, the base is rather large for some of my fixtures ... which won't allow them to screw in all the way. The nice can light type, that put out around 700 lumens are still up over $30. Still, they're better than a hot stick in the eye. .
You should have seen the 60-watt equiv for $12.97 in the same display. The other day I got 2 of the 40-watt equiv. and accidentally smashed one with wayward 2x4 when I got home (still fresh in the pack). So I'm now $20 for one bulb.
I was tempted to post my LED house light test results here but thought "Freds" might be more widely read: Three generations of LED bulbs | PriusChat I haven't taken one apart nor done environmental range testing but I am finally becoming impressed. Bob Wilson
