The "new" direct injection gasoline engines make 10 times more soot (particulate matter) than diesel engines. In response the EU has mandated all GDI cars must have soot traps/filters just as the diesels are required to have. (ponder). GDIs also run lean and produce more NOx too..... perhaps someday they'll also carry urea injection systems?
