Hello everybody! This September, I purchased my family member's 2012 Prius with 190k miles on it for $5000 via monthly payments (5 months paid so far). They replaced the battery and head gasket around 150k, but it runs fine and got me over 40mpg driving back to my college university (500+ miles). My main question is if I should pay off this Prius and find one with lower miles, or drive this one to the ground to get max miles. I have enough to pay off the Prius, but I want to make the best choice. Ideally I want this car to last me past my college grad. for years to come. Thank you for any advice you can offer. TL;DR - Paid 5000$ for 192k Prius from family member. Should I sell and fine one with lower miles?
Hello and welcome. Well if you know the history of the car, I’d keep it. Which battery was replaced? 12V or Hybrid battery? If you can put aside money you would’ve used to supplement and buy another lower mileage one (which I assume will cost more than $5k), you can use it towards a new hybrid battery if it fails. That way, you have an even newer Prius v for the price of the hybrid battery plus $5k. (As opposed to a used one with lower mileage but the original battery). 40 mpg isn’t bad actually for a Prius v.
If the high voltage battery was replaced with a new (not rebuilt) at 150k miles you have a good chance getting 50k miles more at your current mileage. Sometimes the standard 12v battery fails first. Does it use oil? Is it a Prius v wagon?
