I have a 2010 prius 2. I am amazed as to how quiet the car is. I get about 50 on every reset. I drive in Wisconsin and da UP. I am curious as to everyone's over inflating of the tires. Helps that much???
"Over inflating" is opinionated and inflammatory (not that any of us here on PriusChat are sensitive to that). If you mean inflating above Toyota's sticker recommendations but below the Max pressure molded into the sidewall, then sure, we do that. The reason is than sticker recommendations are a compromise among safety, tire life, and your butt's comfort. The tire manufacturer's reference pressure for your tire's ratings is the Max pressure on the sidewall. Period. Less pressure than that yields something indeterminate, but less than its ratings. That said, most of us wouldn't put up with the bone-jarring ride of a Max-inflated tire. What many of us have found is that the Prius responds well to a few pounds more than sticker pressure - better (and safer) handling, better tire life, and better gas mileage. The "optimum" often argued on this site is 42/40, but it's dimishing returns the higher you go. Add 3-5 pounds above sticker and you'll be rewarded. If your local roads and your personal comfort level permit 42/40, you'll be rewarded a little more. Simple as that. Whatever floats your boat.
welcome and congrats! i have mine at 40 and 38, but cannot see difference without controlled testing. same with grille blocking.
Congrats--enjoy. Here's one person's observations regarding tire pressure. On my Prius V (with 17" tires--may be different for 15" tires), I originally kept the tires at the recommended pressure (as shown on B-pillar sticker), then switched for a short time to 5 PSI higher (given recommendations here and elsewhere regarding increased MPG), but the noticeable increase in ride harshness wasn't worth the modest MPG increase (~2 MPG, as I recall). Then around a year ago I noticed that the tires were wearing much more towards the sidewalls than in the center of the tread, so I increased by 10 PSI above B-pillar sticker numbers, and this seems to have addressed the uneven wear issue (and I've gotten used to the ride comfort degradation).
Great site. Lots to read. I think I am going to keep the tire pressure at what Toyota recommends. I do think I am going to block the grill. I noticed a huge jump during a few warms days we had in Wisconsin. I love the video about some of the driving techniques. Pulse and glide. I really think the most improvement you can see is in driver responses. I always drive in Eco and I always avoid rear traffic. I was a smith system driving instructor years ago and all of the techniques are in line with this car. I drove about 140 miles today on the highway and some city and I got 59mpg when I was done. I drive at speed limit and under and really do the glide technique a lot.
I reset my trip every time I fill up. Trip b I reset once a month. Just a gauge..that's what I meant.
