A friend is looking to enter priiadise and is asking for assistance. I know a little more than nothing about the basic things to check but is there a strong, compelling reason or 3, to consider an older g3 over say an 09 g2 in similar condition? Looking for a general, overview opinion please. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
Gen 2 had good engines but their traction battery is older and we're good cars, very reliable. Gen 3 owners will chime in.
Possible option is an 08 that was well maintained and has a failed traction battery. If the price is right, i'm thinking @2ktoaster replacement battery @$1600 and get a good run with that. Owner may part with the 08 for less than 1k. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
Only needing a traction battery 1000 is a great price. If you search around you can find a new factory battery for not much more than 1600. If you were ever thinking resale that would be a large help.
it's really a crapshoot. either are fine cars. most do well, some are not so fortunate. as long as they go in with their eyes open and due diligence, they'll be fine.
I opted for a Gen 2 '09 in 2011 because they were lots cheaper than a Gen3 '09 (10k€ vs >14k€ for similar mileage) and I figured all the startup issues were not yet taken care of in the early Gen3's. I recently looked at a Gen2, supposedly with a failed battery (might also have been an '08), but it was still 2.5k€ (~3k$). For 1k I would have taken a look for sure.
