One more reason for me to despise our neighbor city:

    http://www.ocregister.com/news/rizzone-252105-look-project.html

You'd have thought he put up a smoke chugging, noisy diesel generator, the way his neighbors are whining. Newport: My new definition for hypocracy. They want green ... but not in my back yard. They want a stable running electric grid, but not if it takes away from their personal view of beauty. IMO, I think the panels look great! Newport ... the folks that tried to get the Closed El Toro Marine Base (slated to become another "great park" like Central Park in NY) converted to an international airport, so John Wayne airport could be shut down, and they wouldn't have to listen to jets taking off any more ... though the rest of Orange county would have to shoulder extra traffic, pollution and noise, from an international airport that never even needed to be created.

168 Panels ... covering 3,000 sq feet. Wow! now THAT's a pv system!

Sounds like a good location for a new coal-fired power plant. ;)

What do you expect... the elite want the best, but not at their expense. Nothing new... i'm sure Laguna, Dana Point, and other cities are in the same boat...

At least this guy put his own money towards this project right? Sounds like another case of rich people just having nothing to do but complain.

I'm all for the rich plastering their land with solar panels. Good for them. That's what I'd do if I had the money and land.

Let's do a thought exercise. Put those panels on the roof and use the ground for plant native drought resistant plants(though Newport probably doesn't get much drought) or trees. How much more CO2 are we sequestering in this scenario?

    Did a little math -

Do you realize, if this home owner only bought moderately rated 185 watt panels - HOLY MOLEY ... his system puts out an hourly 31Kwh !!

If his 10,000sq foot home is burning up THAT much juice ... then he's defenately got more business equipment in his home office that we do.
    ;)

Take a look at aerial/street photos of the area. Eyesore my A. There's nothing to look at, even though the picture with the article makes it look like this place is in the middle of nowhere.

One of the commenters on the article is 100% correct. The objections are from people who don't like being reminded that they're part of the problem.

For marijuana homes that get busted because if their super high electricity bills, this is THE way to go.

Presuming the electricity use is on the up & up ... I'd like to think he'll burn an average of no more than 20Kwh. He'll be receiving a MIGHTY nice check from So Cal Edison. Yea ... stickin it to the man.

This reminds me of a movie snippet I saw about a farmer who wanted to put a couple of windmills on his land but the neighboring residents fought him (and WON!). I believe this took place in England... I can't find the story right now. The NIMBY's are everywhere... sad, really.

No, it was definitely overseas. The pristine rolling hills and old farm architecture (plus the accent) made that easy to remember. Also, that it was surprising to me that a country where they are generally perceived to be more progressive would take a stance like that.

My wife and I are visiting our daughter in Irvine this weekend so we took a drive this afternoon into Newport Beach. One stop on the agenda was to see this solar array.

It is located off a main road and faces the ocean. I would say that the physical appearance of the array is not particularly attractive, and can understand the neighbor complaints recorded in the OC Register.
