According to the manual the lane keep assist should cause a tug on the steering in an attempt to keep the car in the proper lane(when running over 55 mph). My 2010 V w/ATP does not do this and in fact sometimes gives a tug even while "in lane". The LKA warning beeps work just fine. The local dealer claims the LKA package is working according to spec. Otherwise, he is baffled. Any ideas anyone?
Were the lines solid at the time and are you still steering the wheel at least once every 15 seconds (or this feature will cancel)?
Lane lines are solid. I do not know about the 15 second rule, but I do know from several thousand miles of freeway driving that the system makes no effort to retain the lane even though the audible indicators are working properly.
Does if give a tug while in lane or are you perceiving it was a tug where it is doing what it does? What I mean is mine does give small corrections even while I am in the lane. I wouldn't call them tugs but you can feel a bounce in the wheel as it tries to keep the car in the center of the lane even while I am still moving the wheel to stay center. And you're saying that if you were on a straight lane and tried on purpose to gently go right or left over a line it doesn't try and autocorrect at all when you're on the line? Give it a try again and see if you feel anything when trying to steer over a line. It will not pull the car back into the lane harshly, but it should give a pull to try and get you back. If you feel nothing when the beeps go off then yes, something is wrong.
The LKA has 2 functions. 1, keeping the vehicle in the center of the lane (LKA). 2, lane departure warning (LDW). For 1 to work, you must activate LKA, set the cruise control above 50MPH and the camera must be-able to detect the lanes. The display will show a steering wheel at the top left of the MFD. When it's in LKA mode, it will tug slightly even when you're nowhere close to the lane marker. It suppose to keep the vehicle in the center of the lane with a slight tug here and there. The tug can be felt if you're holding on the steering wheel with no force. The force of the tug gets stronger as you get closer to the lane markers. When you're driving on the lane marker, the LKA will beep and the will sometimes over power your hands to steer the vehicle back to the center of the lane. Of course the force of the tug can easily overcome. For 2 to work, all you need to turn on LKA and drive fast enough for the camera to detect the lanes regardless of using the cruise or not. LDW will not keep your vehicle in the center of the lane. When you get close to the lane marker, the LDW will beep and warning flashes on the MFD. It will tug as the last resort to get your vehicle to stay in current lane. I find that LKA's camera works best at night. It's able to detect lanes with no reflectors. It works the worst during early evening and driving either north or south bound due to alternating tree shadows. There must be lane markers on both sides of the lane. It can be either solid lanes or broken lanes in either white or yellow. I also found that LKA and LDW work best at it's initial correction. If you don't take over and it has to correct the second time, it will appear to other drivers as if you're driving drunk. The vehicle will weave from left and right and will eventually drive itself out of the lane and cancel itself. It is very dangerous to use LKA without driver input. Don't think that LKA will drive for you because it wont. The DRCC will drive for you better than the LKA. Edit: When you say that the warning beep works fine but no tug, are the beeps continuous? or just double beep?
Try again keeping this rule in mind. If you're on a straight line and it no longer detects your input for 15 seconds and you encounter a curve on the 16th second it won't work. You can't just place your hands on the steering wheel but actively operate it at least once every 15 seconds.
Yes, on a straight line....no auto correction when I drift off. I say the units audible signal is ok because I get two beeps for change of status such as de acquisition ; and 4 beeps when drifting out of lane.
So it does give a tug while "in lane," as it's supposed to. If the curve is too steep, it may be too much for it to autocorrect if you're not steering the wheel at the same time. It's typically too late to autocorrect once it drifts off. It's not designed to drive you to work while you read the newspaper so drive it as if it didn't have LKA and it should do its job.
You are absolutely correct. I have just finished a long road trip where I experimented with the 15 second rule. Everything now makes sense. And I suppose the system is working as advertised. The radar cruise system certainly works well and is a real safety item to someone my age. I would guess the 15 second rule has been installed to prevent "wise guys" from reading the newspaper while driving down the road. Thank you very much. Some observations ...the system seems to want to take curves a little tighter than I normally would. The frequent corrections on nearly straight roads can give a driver strange sensations.
