so much for the new styling igniting sales. or maybe toyota production was off. the press loves the prius though, but they would never buy one

IIRC, that is around what Toyota was expecting to sell. Maybe they could have sold more, but I think they are balancing battery supplies between multiple models. If they think a hybrid only Camry is going to sell 300k a year, they might be stockpiling some packs.
