This seems to indicate the C-Max hybrid is taking directly from Prius liftback sales. 8,900 ish is not a good month for the liftback. It's routinely been over 12k just a few months ago.
At last, hybrids broke 3% of the total market and not just on the back of the Prius Liftback, even though it is still the leader. The second tier are in the $20-30k range, compacts, midsize and wagons. It means we really don't have to waste time chatting about the Chevy Malibu and below because they don't have a significant market presence. They include models that may have a few remarkable attributes but not 'taking over the streets.' They range from niche to fading glory but perhaps not the best use of our time. Bob Wilson
^^ The cars eating into the prius liftback that didn't exist last year are the c-max, prius c, and prius phv, giving buyers new choices. These along with the redesigned camry and fusion hybrids means that the prius liftback will no longer be the one trick pony of the hybrid market. IMHO this is needed to grow the space. There is still major dominance of the power split hybrid with Toyota getting 58% market share and ford getting 17% this month in the hybrid and plug in space.
I know the Prius PHV is still limited to 14 states but I don't know about the others in that group. The ones in limited distribution are likely to see significant sales increases once they go into national distribution. It is good to see efficient hybrids spread out in different models. One size does not fit all . . . or if it does, someone is going to be unhappy. I just wish we could see small pickups and utility vans. Bob Wilson
Wait, a few more months and the Fusion Energi will hit the market. The OM for the Hybrid also includes the Energi, so I have a pretty good handle on what it can do. I really like that I can choose when to use EV, not sure if they are all like that, but that is a good feature. So many choice now to have FE cars, and all of them are good, well, except the Volt, way too expensive, and not that impressive to look at.
Probably not a huge bump, but maybe some. The 15 (not 14) states account for about 60% of hybrid/EV sales.. so adding in the other 35 will be much less than double the likely sales. Hopefully the Volt's supply will be better next month (Nov was suffering from the Oct shutdown. Totally agree on the need for more variety, a nice AWD would be ideal to replace my wife's subrau. Model X likely to be too expensive and too limited.
