It stays pretty mild here in terms of snow and ice but we do get hit a few times each winter. I have to go to work when they call- no ifs.... Auto sport now has autosocks http://www.autosportcatalog.com/index.cfm?...47&sc=44007 and zchains http://www.autosportcatalog.com/index.cfm?fa=p&pid=1046 looking for comments from users... what you like or don't like- ease of use, etc Thanks!
I can't believe that PC is so dominated by CA folks that no one has any winter driving comments at this time!!!!
Well, the snow hasn't flown in NE yet, but I've been thinking I should have *some* kind of traction device for the really nasty stuff at some point ... and those options look fairly good. The "sock" is especially intriguing. The closest I came to getting stuck last year, though, was when I basically high-centered the whole car on some unplowed stuff while playing around in a parking lot ... not sure if chains would even help in that! Managed to work my way back out without shoveling, though. . _H*
There were some threads on the Zchains last year, but I think the socks are new here.... I got away last winterwithout anything but......
A tire dealer here, Les Schwab, sells chains with a no-use return policy. I was driving through some mountain passes so I got a set of chains and can return them for full price credit next spring. Maybe a dealer there has a similar offer. Does the "sock" meet your state's definition of a "traction device"? It sounds like a great product, but only if it is acceptable when your state requires traction devices. Otherwise, get the chains.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Bill Merchant @ Nov 17 2007, 08:50 PM) </div> I do not know,,,It the socks look a little hokey to me. Cable chains are quite reasonalble, easy to put on and off, meet the DOT definition of "chains", they can be run ~30mph. If it is bad enough to need someting other than all seasons, I think that chains are the way to go. A better idea if you get real snow, is to put real snow tires on, at least on the front. Look at Nokian's. I think they build a fantastic winter tire that made my VW Vanagon unstoppable in the snow. Made in Finnland where you would hope they know snowy weather. Icarus
