Far down any list of 'thens' following that 'what if?' Alberta tar-sand boilers fund quite a bit of ecological research. Some aimed at unaltered areas and with interesting results. I only know about that by knowing some folks involved. A strong argument could be made that such things do not ameliorate entire activity. But there is value in developing applied ecology cleanup strategies. They are likely to prove useful wherever goo is extracted in cold climates.
