Hello,I have a 2006 Prius and it has 110k mlies,I replaced the pcv at 100k mi and now it consumes 1 quart of oil every 5000mi, is this normal?
One quart every 5,000 miles is not ideal but it is not awful either. It wouldn't overly worry me if it was my car. I might try some engine oil flush products for the next three or four oil changes and see if that nets any reduction in oil burning.
A 1NZ with this age in years and similar mileage this is not terrible at all and you won't fix it kind of the nature of the beast I have seen others use less with similar years and mileage but not hugely so I wouldn't worry me at all I'll take that car to 666 oil consumption and all matter of fact in some of my Yaris and cars like that I see people that will let them run down almost two quarts the light comes on they fill them up and they do this from 100 something thousand miles to 500 sometimes being late getting the oil in too things still runs great and you can't see the consumption out the tailpipe blue black smoke etc never You can chase that or enjoy the car and leave it alone You're talking rings valve guides internals this engine's been around a long time and looks like it's going to be sticking around and they're cheap if this is something that really worries you get a lower mileage engine stick it in there hardly the thing to do but some people might get there
Are you certain the car didn't burn this oil before you changed the PCV? If you are certain this just started happening after the change, then you should change out the PCV, it could be faulty
For a 17 year old car with over 100,000 miles. That would be a "yes." Keep doing what you're doing!! If you get worried? SELL THE CAR!!! (to ME!) Good Luck!
At that age, it's not that abnormal. A car that old, you need to be "poking your nose under the hood" at every fill-up. Every other fill-up at a minimum. Quick check your coolant levels (x2), brake fluid, and oil level. This is where those extra fast food napkins come in handy. Other things you can check: what oil weight was used on the oil change? I believe your car calls for 5w30; someone may have put in 0w20. different oil brands behave differently; I stick with either Mobil1 or Castrol. I had issues with Quaker-state and Pennzoil about 35+ years ago; I still don't trust their products - but I'm sure they've upped their game since then. Hope this helps.
For decades, 1 quart per 3000 miles was/is the "normal" rate that I have seen. Most auto manufacturers set the "actionable limit"at 1 qt per 1000 miles. ie, you have to document oil consumption of 1 qt or more per 1000 before they will bother looking at it at all. (Some are 1qt / 600 miles!!). 1 qt per 5000 is fine. (ALL engines use some oil) Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
Have you owned this vehicle since new? Do you drive at higher RPMs or uphill? What brand and weight oil have you been using? What is the historical average oil change interval? I would put the old PCV back in and see if the issue goes away, otherwise try : BG EPR 109 before an oil change. Add a quart of engine oil cleaner at the oil change, or when topping up ( https://www.advlubrication.com/collections/automotive-lubricants/products/engine-cleaner ) Do an oil change with either of these HP lubricants : https://advlubrication.com/collections/automotive-lubricants/products/passenger-car-motor-oil or https://www.advlubrication.com/collections/automotive-lubricants/products/premium-passenger-car-motor-oil Do an oil change with Blue Restore : Valvoline Premium Blue Restore for Oil Consumption Repair or Prevention | PriusChat A piston soak with Berrymans b12 chemtool (then change the oil), or Kreen (they claim you can drive with it in the oil as well) : https://www.kroil.com/products/kreen-all-in-one-gas-oil-treatment/
