Does anyone know the oil filter wrench size and number of flutes for a gen 1? I saw some threads for a oil filter wrench for gen2 and gen3. Not sure if it's the same size.
Do you have the vehicle on hand, with proper installed filter? Count the flutes and measure flute face-to-face with caliper? FWIW: I'm using oil filter 90915-YZZN1 on our 2010 (converted to spin-on style). I believe it's the same filter used on second gen, and fourth gen after a certain build-date (partway through 2017 model year). measuring it: 14 flutes face-to-face of flutes: 64.1 mm These dimensions are very common, used also by every recent Honda I've encountered, and a Mazda CX-5. I'm using a Honda automotive oil filter, current part number is 07AAA-PLCA100. The inside face-to-face of fluites is 64.5 mm. I've had this since the early '90's, when Honda automobile filter size was larger, and the 64 mm was just for their motorcycles. It is heavy-gauge stamped steel, indestructible, readily available, just search the part no, say on Amazon. I went on a bit of a serendipity wander at the official Toyota USA parts site, and looked for 2001 Prius oil filter, was referred to two "no longer available" part numbers, and eventually to this page, which I "think" indicates you can use the oil filter I mention above. 90915YZZF2 - Filter sub-assembly, oil. Interchangeable with 90915yzzn1 - Genuine Toyota Part To verify, maybe try the "confirm this fits your" function, on the above page. <Done, does.
It should be standard for 1NZ . Fit em all . probably even the new C. You go wal Mart pick out filter from shelf reach over about 30 inches to the black circles oil filter remover plates pick the one that fits filter you holding . Go home . Tip I use one set filter pliers for hundreds of filters one tool lil space taken up fits almost everything including powersports equip.4 bux .
This is the one for the 90915-YZZN1 filter: . Size "F". 14 flutes. No. 25404. (Link provided for reference only; this item or similar available from the usual sources.)
I also use the pliers. They're a little awkward to use on the Prius - you just have to grab at a pretty steep angle. But it works fine - and ya, one tool for all filters. I've always done the install by hand, of course. Because they're only supposed to go hand tight (3/4-1 turn past gasket contact). I supposed if I couldn't get that by hand, then I'd buy the socket tool.
Torque spec is 3/4 turn past first contact, or 13 foot pounds. I've marked it at 6 o'clock on the face, torqued 13 ft/lb, and the mark was 'round to 3 o'clock.
My Gen 3 with the replaceable-element filter is the first car I ever bought a bespoke oil filter wrench for. Up until then, my one decades-old oil filter strap wrench has removed every oil filter of every size that I've ever needed to remove, and also turned pretty much every other random object I have ever wanted to turn. It's a pretty versatile tool.
So when I convert the Gen 3 cartridge oil filter now to the billet holder that holds the filter that looks to be about the size of the 1NZ I'm going to need a wrench all the time to take that filter off like to take the cartridge out but you know for the filter for the spin on filter? No kidding it's funny because I don't need them for all my other engines I screw on hand tight and I screw off with about twice the hand power that I screwed it on with generally speaking without any leaks or any problems so once I put the first oil filter on the vehicle that I own and drive I don't ever need an oil filter wrench ever again unless well you know you take it somewhere for things that you should be doing.
I do have one installed. But don't have a way to measure the size accurately. I did find in the manual there is oil filter wrench with part number 09228–06501 0922806501 - Oil filter wrench - Genuine Toyota Part Toyota doesn't mention the size or flutes but searching around. It seems like 64mm or 64.5mm and 14 flutes. This seems similar to other generation priuses.
Honda oil filter socket (aka “wrench”? ) is around $30 USD. Fits perfectly, and you could probably drive over it, very solid.
