If the next earthquake is severe enough, secession may be unavoidable! California, always the first to set new trends, would pioneer its newfound independence as a submerged nation, leading the way for all those island nations that will become submerged as global warming raises sea level.
. . . that part of California east of the San Andres fault would remain attached to the North American Plate, and would instantly become a Red State. Unfortunately, San Francisco is not on the Pacific Plate . . . but I'm working on that. Maybe the preceding great tsunami would scrub the Bay Area clean.
It can't happen soon enough. We'll join with Mexico and form one hell of a country! I'm ready to take up arms at the border....of Arizona!
Maybe it should split in half as well. The north would be Hi Cal and the south would be Lo Cal (Tony should get that one).
Why sure. And just think how much revenue we'll have when we don't have the Feds sucking us dry. BTW...do you think Hawaii would like to join us? (If you'd like to read an interesting twist on this idea, look up a book called "Ecotopia". In it the western states have seceded.)
There is that ... California is a "creditor" state. But it might cost more than we think to raise a Navy and Army sufficient to defend the 6th largest economy in the world (we lose some economies of scale in that area). Besides which, I'm an American first, and a Californian second. Civil War Redux? It was after the Civil War that "these United States" started becoming "THE United States" in the minds of the population.
Ahnold is history. He took his best shot (the initiatives) and got his clock cleaned. Now he's attempted a comeback with a big infrastructure scheme, but the Dems aren't going to let him walk off with the plaudits for that, as everyone knows he's dangling in the wind. Phil Angelides will make it possible for the Governator to return to Hollywood and make Kindergarten Cop II. It's too bad we had to waste all this time and money just to get rid of Gray Davis. But it's been worth it, just to get a break from business as usual. New ideas got an airing and the Republicans have been slapped back into place Now that big revenues are returning to the government, we can get back to business, hopefully with Dems who are at least a little chastened by Davis's fate. Warren Beatty and Rob Reiner can content themselves with sponsoring some creative new initiatives. P.S. Unfortunately, we can't secede, or the US will never see another Dem President.
