Hello! I'm a first-time poster, long-time lurker here. I've got a 2001 with 88k miles on it. After sitting for a long time at the beginning of its life, it had the HV battery replaced with a salvage gen I battery last summer. Lately, I've been getting the CEL and the Triangle in the morning, after I drive about 1-1.5 miles. The code is always p3006 and only p3006. Timeline: The p3006 came about a week after one instance of the Turtle Light, on a particularly hot (100 degrees) day (in Phoenix), which went away after a few minutes of gentle driving with A/C on. The day immediately preceding the first p3006, I had an oil change fiasco where the shop put in 5W20 instead of 5W30, and filled it to the "full" mark on the stick, and then when I returned a week later to have them remedy this, they used the right oil, but filled it WAY OVER the "full" mark. I drained a half quart out soon after to remedy this. I also cleaned the MAF sensor and squirted some TB cleaner down there, but didn't swab any excess oil out. This work did nothing to alter the error code. I know this code indicates HV battery failure, but I just wanted to see what y'all thought about the numbers I got back from the shop after a recent HV battery test. To me, it looks like the battery blocks are not too far apart in voltage, but the delta SOC is high. Is this an unusual combination? Is there any reason to think that the HV battery is not failing (maybe corrosion or bad connections, etc.), given these numbers? Your input is appreciated. Thanks! Welcome! You need to get this car read by a Toyota scanner or mini-VCI with Techstream software. The software will tell you the sub codes and be able to read out the individual modules and tell you which one or ones are failing. Then just replace them and you should be good to go. The GEN1 modules are now getting quite old and they fail more from age not miles. There are many people on here with more knowledge than me on this subject that will chime in soon. They surely will be able to help you through this. With the oil weight I am sure 5W20 was just fine and I would have left it in. With the MAF was the correct cleaner used? And for the TB it really should be cleaned properly if it is dirty. For what ever reason these cars are picky with those two items. They are easy DIY cleanings. TomK
The threshold is 0.30 V and yours shows 0.53 V. It means there is a weak pair and the clock is 'ticking' on a monthly or longer scale: heat is the enemy - avoid driving that leads to heavy discharge, speeds > 65 mph on level or discharge showing on the traction battery, and use "B" when descending tall hills. Time to start shopping for a rebuilder or replacement. You're looking at an $1,800-$2,500 price range. Less if you feel like handling it yourself which we'll help but I do not recommend. The reason is rebuilders have gone through a learning curve and offer a one year warranty. Bob Wilson
I've been having the same exact problem over the past two days. P3006, but I do not have an advanced code reader. I have a cheap one that does not read the sub codes. I've been clearing the fault (3 times in two days and I have a 55 mile commute each way) but I need to address this sooner than later. Can anyone recommend a good replacement in the west (in New Mexico)? I'm in Santa Fe. I have a buddy who can help me swap it out as he has done it a few times so that's not an issue. Is a new OEM battery an option or are we limited to rebuilt packs?
You can get a new OEM battery. 12 month 12,000 mile warranty. For rebuilt, be wary of where you buy them. There are plenty of shady characters out there more than willing to rip off Prius owners.
