Sometime between 6:50 pm (#9,994) last night and 9:45 am today (#10,003), the PC system assigned member # 10,000 to---someone. I wasn't able to track it down, because I think that person hasn't posted yet. NOOB was 9994 and Nickp001 was 10003. However, there's a discrepancy between the member number that appears on each member's posts and the total that appears on PC's front-page "board stats". That total # now stands at 9,727, about 280 less than the numbers assigned to the most recent members. I tried to contact Danny about this, but haven't been able to so far. I know he posted something a while ago about wanting to reach 10,000 by the end of the year. Has PC done it?
Well, technicaly there's 2 different #s here: There's the 10,000 number that mblaksley was assigned which is based on the overall # of people who have signed up on the site. Then there's the # that shows up on the main page - the current 9,700+ members. This number is the number of members that we have after any members who had me delete their accounts, or, back in the earlier days of PC, spam bots came onto the site and created porn-esque usernames, so I had to delete those. So, we can celebrate both #s
... and also possibly due to crashes, depending on how the counters and user databases were restored. Gee, 10K. No wonder I can't keep up wth the General page. I've just about given up trying. Takes me ALL DAY!
As I scanned the members' pages from A to Z, it became clear that PC is growing, at least recently, at the rate of 25-30 PER DAY. If that's because of speculation on the '06s and/or the tax break (which is a safe assumption), it'll continue like that or even accelerate. Some PC members' names could be in the Hall of Fame.
Following Danny's explanation, the membership number shown, updated frequently, on "Board Stats" is closer to a "real" number than the numbers assigned to individuals as they sign up. PC will probably reach 10K tonight or tomorrow morning. Since 12 days ago, PC has averaged about 25 new members per day!
