I was driving on the Southern State Parkway in Long Island recently. I was going 70 in bumper to bumper traffic and as I approached a low overpass, a flock of pidgeons flew down from the overpass and scattered in all directions when they were about 4 feet above the ground. One unlucky bird chose to fly straight down the lane I was in and smacked into my my windshield directly in front of my face. It scared the hell out of me. I thought for sure that the windshield was going to shatter, but fortunately it held without even a crack. Once the ringing in my ears subsided, the only evidence that was left was a whiteish smear where the bird hit. I'm convinced the shallow angle of the windshield saved me. If I was driving my old Exporer which had a much more vertical windshield, I'm sure the bird would have gone through.
