Almost done with the EGR cleaning has got me thinking about what other major failures “could” happen. Coming up on 130,000 I’m wondering if I should replace the water pump. The replacement doesn’t look that hard, I think I can handle it. My understanding is if the water pump goes it could be “game over” very shortly if you drive on it. Since they blessed us with no temp gauge on these vehicles, I’m thinking it may be time to do it proactively? Is the thermostat also something I should do at same time?
I did both at the same time at 175 k miles. I figured out 2010’s water pump had been in service for over 8 years at the time, so it was due in my mind. Swapped them out and I could tell there was more resistance in the impeller spinning than in the new pump . Good luck and keep us posted .
I think Rock Auto has the Aisin replacement and that’s what I got. They grind off the name, but it’s the same thing.
For a temperature gauge I think you can't beat driving with a ScanGauge. It can also display about 20 other functions while you drive. No installation, it plugs into the OBDII port.
I found a used one listed on http://www.croooober.com for $36.00 plus 41 shipping from Japan. I’m on the fence about a used one, but it looks pretty clean.
I have an aftermarket radio and there is supposedly some adapter I can get that will add a viewable display of vehicle health gauges. I might go that route not sure yet.
Why? Where's that resistance? Friction in a seal, dry bearings, or what ... ? Did your old pump sound normal?
Not sure the reason why, but it could be multitudes of reasons: Component swelling Magnet distortion Magnet delamination Etc. Since the pumps are magnetically driven, no conventional bearings. But there was resistance and was noticeable when compared to the replacement.
