I went looking for a CTS accelerator assembly to understand what they are doing only to discover: I'm less interested in the base as much as the resistance assembly: I'll check the connector and resistance range but this may turn out to be an affordable, replacement. Get a salvage Scion accelerator and transplant the encoder. I paid $28 for the Scion assembly on Ebay and will soon find out if it works. Bob Wilson
Hey Bob, can you do us a favor please. Can you take a picture of the pedal where it joins the arm on the reostat while at rest then a second photo from the same angle at full throttle? A third picture at half travel would also be good. I think I can see an issue just looking at what you posted. Thanks mate
Better still, I can give a list of links to my accelerator photos: http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_010.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_020.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_030.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_040.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_100.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_110.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_120.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_130.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_200.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_210.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_220.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_230.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_240.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_250.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_260.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_300.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_310.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_320.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_330.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_340.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_350.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_370.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_380.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_390.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_395.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_398.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_500.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_600.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_610.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_620.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_630.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_640.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_700.jpg http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_acc_710.jpg Some links may be 'dead' as I may not have uploaded the photos. Bob, I have to say you are a bloody genius! Wow! Even if this does not work out, perhaps there is a way to make it work. You being an engineer by trade, I am quite confident you will find a way. I will be watching this with greater eagerness. Thank you so much for posting this, as I have a feeling that my Prius pedal my be in need of replacement soon!
Correct. Doug Schafer, one the pioneers, fault-isolated the problem to 'dirty wipers' in the encoder. He developed a cleaning procedure and when he went overseas, I picked up his business, refurbishing accelerators. ... egg money. I've long suspected the problem came mostly from the 2001-02 years and there was probably a fix applied to the production units. Since the Scion encoder looks similar (we don't know about the connector, yet) this might be a clean way to get a more modern encoder in the accelerator without having to pay $500 (Toyota list price) or my egg money. Dang Bob, that Scion thingee looks mighty familiar - why didn't we think of this before? How many Toyota vehicles are throttle by wire? and is it purely a subset of those that are now under recall? I think we may know much more about non-rug accel problems soon. How odd if potentiometer cleaning leads in some way to that knowledge. BTW chicken eggs are about 7 cents US equivalent here, what are yall in industrialized nations paying?
At the time, we had a 2001 Echo and it had a manual throttle cable. The Scion popped up when I was trying to find one of the CTC style accelerators on Ebay and serendipity. We still need to check the connector but gosh is sure looks familar. Bob Wilson
