First-of-its-kind hybrid electric ferry boat to take maiden voyage in SF Bay – East Bay Times On Thursday, one small ferry boat company will make one giant stride for the maritime industry and the environment as the Enhydra, a first-of-its-kind hybrid electric ferry, takes its maiden voyage in the San Francisco Bay. At 128-feet long, carrying up to 600 passengers, the Enhydra is the largest aluminum-hulled passenger vessel built in the United States to be powered with lithium-ion batteries and plug-in electric technology, according to its operator, Red and White Fleet. It’s the “Prius” of ferry boats, said Tom Escher, the company’s president. First-of-its-kind hybrid electric ferry boat to take maiden voyage in SF Bay – East Bay Times Mike
Sure wish that article had engine & battery specs... I'm sure the amount of KW of batteries you can put on a big boat is impressive. If anyone wants to go digging for details on the boat, I'd love to learn more...
First phev ferry? It's at least 2 years late to be first. They are now working on this Future of the Fjords Sightseeing Vessel - Ship Technology A BEV 400 passenger ferry that can charge 800 kwh in a 20 minute docking period. Enhydra | Red and White Fleet 8 gallons/hour x 2 hours = 16 gallons 33.7 kwh/gallon x 16 gallons = 540 kwh which means battery should be larger than this.
here in Norway in my city we have electric ferries, like 5 of em driving around town. We got our first like a year ago, th e rest of the diesel ferries is about to get changed out to EL. I find it more impressing how the norwegian ship company "color line" have made "color hybrid", which will drive from sweden, strømstad to Norway, kristiansand every day. So its not exactly new lol, been in norway for a while.
Again... The specs on the engine size and HP and KW in the battery pack and torque are usually mind blowing on boats... And anyone can post a picture of a stupid boat. Why not do some research and look up the specs and posts some quotes with a link to learn more? Come on folks, this is Instagram, we're not mindlessly scrolling thru pics on Prius Chat. Let's be smart and well-researched in our posts and not dumb and boring!
