i can manually shift it out of park with the release button and then it switches gears fine but as soon as I put it in park again, it stays in Park. My brake lights work. My back up lights seem to be out. Do you think they are related?

A neutral safety switch malfunction could cause something like this. Not sure if that's your issue or not, but it sounds like either that switch, or your computer isn't sensing that the brake pedal is being depressed. It's engaging enough to trip the lights, but not the computer, perhaps.

Here's a long shot but, did you or anybody ever figure out the problem?

Turned out, it was the fuse that controls both the backup lights and shifter lock.
