I stumbled upon the last video below which shows an actual 3rd generation Prius CVT including the MG1 and MG2 motor/generators. I was struck by how small the whole assembly is and it's relative simplicity. When you consider the small motor shown can drive a Prius 40-60 mph (depending on model), it's even more amazing what Toyota has accomplished. The 3rd video is a classroom lecture of 30 minutes but is worth the time especially the last half. It also shows the differences between the latest CVT (eg no chain drive) and the previous versions. The video does not show the motor windings themselves, however they are obviously a key component as are the computer control modules. For those who could use a little grounding on what a MG is and how the whole thing operates, see videos 1 and 2. 1. Intro 2. Intro second half 3. Classroom lecture and demonstration Generation 2 vs 3 CVT (30 minutes) :end
That was great education on the internal gears. I am always amazed at the engineering design of gear sets. Thanks for sharing.
