Is the base 7 inch radio in a 2018 Prime replaceable with aftermarket units? I looked on Crutchfield and they say nothing is compatible for the Prime model. If I select the non-Prime Prius, then it shows available head units. The radio failed and the dealer says it is failing to take attempted software updates. They want $1500 to replace it. An option would be to buy a used unit from eBay, but doesn’t that require a code and programming from the dealer to activate? If aftermarket radios are an option, what about the integration for Bluetooth phone calls, steering wheel controls and the backup camera? Aren’t there also some car management and diagnostic features that are embedded in the stock radio that you lose with aftermarket radios?
You can go with and android unit like the teyes would be much cheaper even if you can't do the install yourself. Its has some minor flaws like the backup cam and stuff but most seem to be happy with it. You would get much better sound from it though without all the eqing and have wireless carplay/android https://www.teyes.com.au/products/teyes-cc3-for-toyota-prius-xw50-2015-2020-car-radio-multimedia-video-player-navigation-stereo-gps-android-10-no-2din-2-din-dvd

Looking for something that integrate with the car the best and connect to the existing factory backup camera. Apple CarPlay would be nice to have, but otherwise, just getting a replacement of the existing stock radio might be best since it’s for someone who isn’t techy and won’t be able to deal with quirks and glitches that will require any amount of troubleshooting. If we try an aftermarket unit, it would need to be stable model that never freezes up and needs to be reset.
