Black Gold by J. Naomi Ay. Mona and Bitsy leave the mall to head home when a thunderstorm and the possible tornado pick up their Prius and set them down in the middle of a wheat field. Somewhere. They're definitely not in Kansas anymore, and Reuben and Sean McLean are definitely not Munchkin men. The girls want to go home to Littlefield, Illinois in the year 2010, but their car is out of gas, a lovesick cowboy is chasing Bitsy, there's a major case of gender confusion, and a land-grabbing scheme has to be foiled. There's also a farm to be saved and murder mystery to solve, but after meeting the McLean brothers, do the girls really want to go home?

I enjoy J. Naomi Ay's space fantasy books so when I saw she had written a time travel book, I was eager to read it. It's a funny, fast-paced book about two young women, Mona, the one with a brain, and Bitsy, the one with boobs, who end up in North Dakota when an unexplained phenomenon carries their Prius back in time. They land on a farm in the middle of nowhere. The farm is populated by a family of dimwits, most notably, two sons named Sean and Rueben. Sean's I.Q. points match the inches around his waist, and Rueben is not sure why he is attracted to the "boy" as the local folks call shorthaired, flat-chested Mona. As the girls try to figure out where they are and how to get back to where they were, a shifty land deal, organized by the local tax collector and a short scoundrel named Buck, causes mayhem from one end of the valley to the other. And all that takes place before Mona discovers oil on the farm! Misinformation, love triangles, a mysterious granny, and a strong desire to go to California fuel the action and I liked the way Ay got all the loose ends tied up by the end. I also love her humor. Great light read for a summer day at the beach.
