Checking out the used car ads I'm seeing 2010 IIs going for what I paid new for mine with 20k miles. One local stealership wants $22k for a certified 2008 with 40k miles. There is one unbelievable deal still at a used car lot that seems behind the times, though. Anybody else seeing craziness on used ones? I wouldn't say the prices are end of world crazy yet but they do seem higher than a month back, no surprise really with shortage of new and gas prices.
I noticed that too when we were looking for our second car. 2010s with the same mileage as ours were going for basically what we paid for ours new...kinda stinks because I would have loved to be a two Prius family.
You think it's expensive in New York? Here in Orange County, CA, dealers are asking $25K for Gen II Priuses/Prii. Check autos.yahoo.com. Basic gasoline is $4.15 here right now.
I suppose I was fortunate in my timing because it seems my Prius currently is worth more than what I paid for it.
Should've bought 3...of course if I did that someone would have invented the 200mpg carbuerator and I would be SOL.
Don't you know, Krelborne? Prius is traded as a derivative of Wisconsian powdered goat milk at the local farmers' market exchange. I have a batch of August call options for used 2008s at a strike price of $24,000. tpfun told me all about it so that's where I've put my hard earned dollars for retirement. Thanks, tpfun!
So as an aside, I went to look at used cars over my lunch break today. Test drove a used Gen II because I was thinking if I could get one at a good price with low miles, I would want to do a conversion. The owner of the lot would not budge a penny. He pointed to the price of gas at the gas station next door and said he'd rather hold them than sell them. He raised all his prices ~$2000 over the last two weeks. He sold one yesterday.
Regular gas is $4.25 in the SF East Bay Area. That's with 15% unemployment and another 10% who have fallen off the charts and have given up finding a job. Dealers create the prices based on what they think they can get. If buyers will pay them then they raise the prices again. They can always negotiate down if need be.
