A Co-worker just purchased a 2002 4 door with 45k miles on it yesterday from a Dealer's lot in Buena Park, CA.

She came to me and reports they sold her $5k worth of warranties and pre-paid service.
I'm very very skeptical of these dealers and what they'll try to lead one into believing they "have to have".

-Is the 2002 as bullet-proof as my 2005?
-Isn't the original factory Warranty still valid?
-Pre-paid maintenance.....puh-leeeeeez.....just change the oil and drive it.

Can anyone offer me some advice to get to this lady....she has 3 days from yesterday to reconsider these $5k of options she was talked into!

    Thanks

    ps....
3yr Ext care service agreement cost her $2700
    4yr Pre-paid Maintenance cost her $1400

Most people are agreed that pre-paid maintenance is a joke... is she really going to change her oil that many times in the next 4 years? Even with oil and filter change and tire rotation every 5k miles, you're looking at like 150, max. Seems to me that doign that 10 times in 4 years is a bit much, but it all depends on driving habits, i guess... Tell her to look at her standard miles/month and in the service manual to see what needs to be done when, and look at local prices (remember, anyone can do this stuff, not just Toyota). do the math, and you'll see the dealers making money on you.

As for the warrenty, check out http://priuschat.com/Discounted-Toyota-Pri...acts-t3130.html A 7-year, 100,000 mile warrenty for under $1000... thats only for original owners, however there is a link on there for information for used owners that could be helpful.

In short, she's being taken to the cleaners by her dealer.

So it looks like she can get a pretty good deal on the Warranty from Troy?
    http://priuschat.com/index.php?showtopic=23489

Guess I'll call him and find out if he can swing this for her!

    edit....:
    Just called Troy,
I guess with her car being out of the original factory 3yr/36k.....that it is too late to purchase another Toyota Warranty and she'll have to opt for a 3rd party.

Sounds like a hell of a lot of money to put down for a 2002 car. How much did she pay for the car itself?

I bought a 2002 with no warranty 15 months ago for $16K with only 7,200 miles on it has front and side airbags and 6cd. Bought another 2002 6 weeks ago with 45K miles on it for $13.5 with 30 months left on the platinum 7/100 warranty - this one has everything the other one has plus cruise and DVD Nav.

Yup many stealers are thieves. I have a customer that always talks to me about my '02 pri and has been very interested in getting one. When I stooped by her place a week ago I saw a newer prius in her driveway with temp tags. It was an '04 with 65K miles on it that they just raped her to the tune of $20K for. Insult to injury -- there was damage to one of the rear doors at some time and you can clearly see it is painted a slight shade different than the rest of the car. There should be laws.

Tell her to try to get her money back as soon as she can, and don't ever do business with that dealer again. It would be nice if she could take the car back also, I bet they got to her for that too. If she can't take the car back she should get a vehicle history report on it ASAP, if it's been wrecked or if it has been a flood victim she might want to see a lawyer. It would be good to contact the state Attorney General's Office also.

    W00t.....
Just got a report that she went back to the dealer and made them give her all the money back for the Extended service agreement the pre-paid maintenance and the L0-jack.
Then she goes back home and starts to read the user guide from the John's website to which she realizes the dealership maliciously charged her $800 for the glass-breakage sensor. So one more trip back to the dealer and another $800 back in her pocket.
    Sigh!
She is very happy now with her purchase and looking forward to happy miles with her Prius! :D

Sweet! I'm glad she could get (at least some of) her money back! the stealers really work hard to take a lot, and it definately takes a lot of knowledge to know what they shouldn't be charging you for.
