Hello everyone!! I'm a mechanical engineering student and as a part of a project I'm doing this year I need to find several information concerning gears in power split device. Unfortunately I was unable to find it neither on this forum nor in google, so perhaps there is a chance that someone will help me. What I need to find is the exact dimension of each gear (ring gear, sun gear and planetary gears) and also, what are they made of. Thanks for help
Take a look at eaharts simulator here : Toyota Prius - Power Split Device Here's a picture of a cut away of the Gen2 PSD. The green annotation is my own, it's just what I think is what from studying the image and therefore not necessarily correct. I cant remember the link where I downloaded the original (un-annotated) image, hopefully others can chime in with some more links.
Yep, here is a picture of the two drives side by side. The Gen III drive on the right is somewhat lighter and more compact than that of the Gen II (left), and the chain coupling to the final drive has been replaced with a gear driven from the outside of the ring gear.
Yeah I noticed that too. The only thing is, the part that's covered is the stator - which doesn't rotate. Looking at MG2 on the right the thing that stands out the most to me is the apparent decrease in the amount of iron used in the stator iron circuit. Looking at that I'd say the a lot of the size/weight savings are due to improvements in magnetic materials over the years since the Gen2 was designed. Presumably the rotating mass of the permanent magnets on the rotor has also been reduced, which may be what accounts for the increase in MG1 maximum rotational speed.
Other than tooth count, I don't believe you are going to find dimensions or material specs for the gears online. If you do find that information, please come back here and share it with us.
This is a quite interesting explanation of how the HSD parts are interrelated. Long winded but worth it, once he puts all the pieces together. Prius (2nd Gen) P112 Hybrid Transaxle (eCVT) Operation - YouTube
It seems noone answered the OPs question. I'm sure he was able to find all this info but he needs more specifics. He was asking for dimensions and material makeup.
