On the interstate putzing along at 64mph in the right lane. Thankfully...for only the second time...I had plugged in at work, so there was enough juice in the pack to make it the 5 miles to the closest gas station.

I guess I should of read the FAQ closer...I assumed the last little blinking bar would disappear with at least half a gallon left. I have no excuses, we've owned a v wagon for 2+ years but I've never seen the tank that low...my wife is smart enough to refill it before empty or force me to do it against my own worst instincts when we're on a trip.

I drove with that thing blinking for a few days with a lot of EV miles...so I didn't think I was at risk, probably 160 miles or so...I don't know for sure. It filled 10.5 gallons with one extra click of the handle ... 702 miles travled 72mpg on the Hsi display for a 5 mpg over report...which irks me after spending 5 years in a Civic hybrid that averaged a 1.7 mpg under report.

When it ran empty it felt like the car took a punch to the gut and immediately dropped to 56 mph...I dipped heavily into the pedal and it agonizingly limped to 58...I was in hybrid mode and both the ECO and EV icons were lit. Sick to my stomach, I thought either the freaking transmission or engine management computer failed...I flipped to trip A saw nearly 700 miles and went from sick to disgusted with myself.

Is that 'v' bootom of fuel gauge any different than the regular Liftback described here?

    I hope I don't sound like I'm being critical; I'm just curious.

Being a first-time Hybrid owner, I guess I'm not understanding the Prius owner "mentality." We don't allow any other vehicle to run to empty... (do we?) So why a Prius? What is the desire, or even the purpose, to drive these cars to the point of fumes? :ROFLMAO:

I drove my car until the low-fuel warning came on, just once. It was a learning experience. I'm a rookie. I wanted to make a mental note of how many miles my Prius could go on a full tank of gas. Now I know. Game over. I'm back to driving it like any other car... and never let the fuel level go below 1/4 tank; or even refill at 1/2 tank if I get a craving for a spicy hot dog at the Mobil station.

Take a closer look at people walking along the side of the road. Yes, a bunch of people do it in other vehicles too.

I am wondering if PiP has less gaso remaining in the tank when the flashing PiP comes on. In a way, that would be nice because PiP has a smaller gaso tank, but if they let you go further before flashing, then effectively you would get the same cruise distance between fill ups.

    NUTS!

I just do t get it.

Why don't they fill up when it's only a half tank low, and then they won't feel like they are spending so much money. :ROFLMAO: (y)

when my pip beeps, and the last bar flashes, i can only pump 8 gallons, so there's 2 1/2 gallons left.

there is no mpg reading on the pip for just gas miles, so i'm not sure how o/p is measuring against calculated. i suppose you can just divide gallons into miles driven, but they both include ev miles. i use the rive ratio for hv miles for a manual calculation.

Cus they feel like the more often they fill up, the more they spend? Irrational, but human nature. I'm with you: it's below half full, and I'm passing Chevron, I'm pulling in. But that's like every three or four weeks.

Paying with plastic, it's relatively painless, arms-length. I don't even look at the price on the pump, no point.

Is that true? Can't be. When you're seeing trip, what happens if you quickly push the trip button (not press-and-hold) on steering wheel? It should cycle through all the options, one being mpg since last trip reset.

    Downloaded 2012 PIP Owner's Manual:

Here's an excerpt from page 272, note item 3:

Hmm, maybe it is complicated..., maybe it's not giving total mpg, just mpg when not in EV mode?? o_O

it has two trip meters like all ten 3, but the only way to get a real mpg reading is not to plug in. otherwise, it's just total miles divided by gas use. even though the car tracks ev and hv miles, it doesn't do a calculation based on hv only.

took me about a year of ownership. a lot of newbies thought they were really getting 120 mpg.:p

judging by the o/p's report of 72 mpg, i don't think he was using as much ev as he thought.

Yeah, but one sane person is hopelessly outmatched by the hordes of crazy squids in the Navy.

    Same in Priusdom.

I've noticed that Prius people worry a lot.
    A WHOLE LOT.
Still....there's always going to be people who try to leg a tank out that last mile to get into the 800-mile club.
That's why Toyota (the buzz-kill car company) equipped their tanks with a nearly 20-percent working reserve.
    Me?
I'm about capability, and I'm smart enough to use basic math skills..........barely.
I'm also skeptical enough NOT to trust the car to tell me how much flight time I have remaining, especially when it's built by a company that can't understand why people would want to know trivial little things like engine coolant temp or RPM.
    So.....I run until DTE=0.
    Then?
I start thinking about loading fuel sometime in the next 100 miles.

In 110,000 miles I don't think Ive filled up more than 5 times when DTE was >1.
I've also never loaded more than 11.5 gallons.

It's not about getting into the 1,000 mile club, or testicular fortitude, or the hatred of fueling up.
It's just the way I roll.
The Prius is CAPABLE of something in the neighborhood of 500 miles with about a 15 percent working reserve. A little less if it's the end of the day and you just don't feel like tanking before heading back to the barn.
Carrying around 2.5 gallons of heavy, volatile, and expensive fuel just doesn't sound.......efficient. ;)

I went just a little bit too far on this current tank. (What can I say... distracted driving?) Definitely time to give the White Night a nice long drink. And get a 1/4 LB hot dog! :ROFLMAO:

Look at that temperature. We don't need no stinkin Winter! ;)

When my gaslight is flashing I get gas. It's pretty funny to hear peope with the most fuel efficient car running out of gas. Especially when the average person in a Prius is going weeks on a tank of fuel

A good question, that I can't answer: I've spent very little time behind the wheel of the v...it's my wife's car and when we are all in it either she or my son with is permit and now with his license are mostly in the driver's seat and they like to fill the tank at normal intervals. If no one chimes in right away, I will report back on how it compares to my Plug In Prius...which may differ by more than the smaller gas tank from the regular Gen 3 lift back.

Well for one thing filling up less you think about getting gas less...

I don't think there is any problem running the DTE to 0, just be sure to be getting gas when you reach that point. I will also point out that the DTE will go down much slower on a trip than if you stop and go. I have been 50 miles DTE, get in the car the next day, drive 20 miles and the DTE drop down to like 10 miles... At any rate, you have a small reserve, don't get too comfortable. Do realize it is a relative estimate. It might say 50 but you could maybe go 80 assuming you average over 100 MPG for the next 60 miles or so....could be 9 miles if you've got to climb a mountain.

Common sense says look at the gauge, if you have 1/8 th tank showing (4th gen) on a trip, get gas, if you're in a city, probably can go a little bit.

Lots of EV over the last few days so the MPG was trending up...more extended highway time visiting customers early in the tank.
