After reading most of the "I almost ran over somebody in the parking lot" thread there are a couple of points I'd like to make. 1. Pretty sure the beeping inside of the car is not meant to be heard outside. Pretty sure it's there because if you do the movement shifter wise that puts all other cars in park, all you did to the Prius was put it in reverse. 2. I'm pretty sure there are idiots out there that would love to "bell" the Prius like a cat. Us acting like a quiet car is a problem add fat to the fire. 3. For those that want to, there are many ways to add a "reverse beep" to your car. Here is just one way, a beeping tail light bulb Back-Up Alert Beeper and 1156 Style Halogen Bulb - HOP20100VA You can't fix stupid. People walk out in front and or behind me in my Dooley Diesel pickup truck with the same frequency as they do when I'm in the Prius
Your Toyota dealer can change the backup to a single beep rather than a continuous series of beeps. Look at the Customization section in your Owner's Manual to see what else can be changed.
The customization section of the manual, turned into a nice single page checksheet, is posted here: http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...m/67909-things-can-customized.html#post940806
Yes, the beep can be changed to a single beep, mine has, but that wasn't my point. My point is that for some reason a LOT of people seem to think the beeping is to warn people outside of the car, but it obviously isn't. If for some reason you think your car SHOULD sound like a garbage truck, it's real easy to do. The link I gave may not have been for the correct bulb, but many are available, just please don't help others in the quest of making me put a noise maker on my car, I guess flashing strobe lights should be next?
That beeper is dangerous. The noise can prevent you front hearing another car approach or somebody shouting that they are behind you. People that have cars with parking sensors may think the Prius beep will alert them of near objects.
Constant beeping is in my opinion annoying, A single beep serves it's purpose and doesn't annoy, again in my opinion
