Just watched Scientific American Frontiers - Car of the Future - excellent show about new vehicle fuel technology from hybrids to hydrogen. Had a nice segment on the Prius. Check it out on PBS if you get a chance! This may have been a repeat - I'm not a big TV watcher but was in a hotel with nothing better to do...sorry if this has been posted before!
yes this show has been discussed in the environmental forum. definitely one of the brighter spots for getting the word out on the Prius.
At this thread here. I agree -- a bright spot, period. Along with the Scientific American Magazine article a few months ago on the effectiveness of hydrogen fuel technology, this program was a great source of information about hydrogen car technology.
Was that the piece on how a hybrid actually produced less net pollution than hydrogen cars if you consider the pollution produced during the process of creating the fuel cells? Or maybe that was elsewhere, I truely cannot remember.
The Scientific American magazine article was the one that listed how different possible automobile energy sources compare regarding: How much pollution was caused, and How much energy was expended from mining/extracting the fuel to getting it to the pump at your gas station. One important point: how hydrogen rates on this scale (particularly in pollution) depends very much on how its extracted. My guess is that the extraction method used in Iceland (and shown on the TV program) would be about the cleanest method available.
