Not sure if you get it over in the US but if you ever get the opportunity to watch the new 21st century version of Sherlock Holmes tv programme called 'Sherlock' then you should. It takes a little getting used to but it's excellent. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherlock_(TV_series)
according to my DirectTV app on my iPhone... it's not playing over here any time soon If anything, I would expect it to play on BBC America here, which I actually watch fairly frequently
I saw last night that it's available through Netflix instant. Didn't watch yet though. In the US it was on PBS, since it is a partnership between BBC and Masterpiece.
One summer during college, I bought a book containing replicas of all Strand episodes of Sherlock Holmes. A beast of a book. Read every one with fascination from A Study in Scarlett to The Final Solution and beyond. Thanks for the heads up.
Series 1 of Sherlock is on DVD/Blu-ray here in the States. I've seen it on blu-ray and it's certainly more entertaining then many current TV shows. I like how they try to spin Sherlock into modern times (his use of text messaging in particular). The only shame is that BBC is fine with a season just being 3 episodes!
have not seen it yet, i'll check the pbs website. do you watch doc martin at all? it's my new favorite show!
lol Doc Martin, yeah it's popular - and he drives a hybrid too by the look of it Got a friend who lives down Cornwall way and it is as beautiful as it looks on the tv show. [ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doc_Martin]Doc Martin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]
Yeah but each episode is 1 hour 45 mins over here WITHOUT commercial breaks. I'm sure if they do export it to the US they'll mach each episode a two parter? Anyhow, a new series is on its way and should be a good watch. Here's a little taster;
it is a beautiful spot. hey, i just saw an ad for sherlock whilst watching doc martin! is that it or is it sherlock holmes? i saw maggie smith (professor mcgonnagle).
I was lucky and was in Australia when they broadcast the series last year - loved every minute of it. Cannot wait for the next series. Grumpy, any idea when the next series is going to be released in the UK?
Which one? Doc Martin or Sherlock? Doc Martin has a new season coming out over here next month. Sherlock is in the process of filming and three more are due late next year! but will hopefully be worth waiting for - esp the modern take on Hounds of the Baskerville.
just watched the first episode of sherlock on netflix, excellent! now i know why you like it: 'grumpy cabby'?
watching episode three tonight. grumpy, are you saying episode four will not be available until late 2012?
Yes (well mid 2012 over here) I think they got caught out with a surprise hit and are presently filming the new series. This again will only have three long episodes, well at least over here it will. Whether they get chopped up for American TV and commercials is another matter. So did you enjoy it? Or am I easily pleased? I do think it's better for watching a few times though. Oh and don't you just love the actors name who plays Sherlock Holmes - Benedict Cumberbatch. Love it.
we absolutely loved it. is that really moriarty? what a finish! i can't wait that long. this is worse than harry potter!
Wasn't it! They really have done a fantastic job in updating both Sherlock and Moriarty and make them both very very believable. Personally I find this modern take makes much more sense than the original novels.
I was going to post that I'd seen it was available on Netflix. Incidentally, they've recorded another season of Doc Martin (which you mentioned earlier in the thread). It's going to be shown this fall in the UK so hopefully it'll appear on Netflix some time early next year. (My wife loves it, I enjoy it. It was recommended by a friend of hers and she was very disappointed once we'd watched all of the shows on Netflix.)
I watched episode 1 of the Sherlock series on NetFlix. As TV goes, it was good. However, calling it Sherlock Holmes was a shameless exploitation of a famous name. The character has nothing in common with his namesake, and the only similarities are the names of the characters and the address of his flat. Connon Doyle's Holmes was a quiet, ruminative thinker whose deductions were believable. This Holmes is manic almost to the point of psychosis, never quiet for a moment. His behavior and his character are so utterly opposite that of the original that if they weren't pandering after fans of the original they'd have invented a new name and a different address. BTW I'll say the same of the character in the recent Sherlock Holmes movie: He bears no resemblance to the original, and using the name Holmes is shameless pandering. I'll take the books over the movie and tv show any day.
we're getting doc martin on pbs at 8:00 thursday evening. not sure what year we're watching to tell the truth. louisa just agreed to marry doc in the last episode. it's not always perfect, but has many funny moments and characters. as good as anything i have seen, but i'm not a tv junkie and don't care for anyof the shows on commercial/cable.
