I am just about to hit my 30K mile and am wondering if I should purchase the Extended Warrantee? I have purchased them on other cars and never used them, on the other hand, I am the person that Murphy interviewed so things have a tendency .... Note that I am in the DC area and so do city/suburb driving rather than a lot of long distances.
No, unless a (remotely possible) multi-thousand-dollar repair would break you. There are few if any cars less in need of an extended warranty than a recent Prius. Put that money in a bank and let it earn interest.
i think the average lcd or backlight is likely to burn out or dim in 7 years and you got half of the money back if that happens, so i went for it if you sell the car you can resell the warranty to the new buyer if the car gets in a wreck, or change your mind after 30 days you can get a prorated refund
which mfd are you basing that on? there at least 3 maybe 4 mfd screens if the dealer replaces it, you got your money back if you find one yourself then yeah i guess your only out half
I'm just using your example: if you pay $1000 for the extended warranty, and if "you got half of the money back" (as you postulated), then you're still down $500. Did I misunderstand you?
i do not know, its just silly why people spend up to 4,000.00 on the option packages no problem but they will inquire about $1055.00 on a warranty. if anything, i'd get it for the display screen or the shocks/struts at least you can choose to get a prorated refund when its time to sell the car off like everyone says its a total gamble. odds are your never going to use it. toyotas seem to run forever with regular maintenance. i drive 25,000 miles a year, so i am going to be burned and lose 2-3 years of coverage, but i still got it. the only argument i got for getting it, besides the display, suspension, and maybe dvd player, is the additional towing coverage. with the basic warranty, you get free towing to the dealer if its a warranty issue for 3 years 36,000 miles. (and a rental if its overnight waiting for parts) the extended warranty will give you the same towing benefit for 100,000 miles, 5 days of free rental cars (50.00 per day) per visit, and a dislocation benefit of $100 a day for 5 days over the life of the agreement. 50.00 x 5 days per visit if you are local 100.00 x 5 days over the life of the agreement if you are 150 miles away the bad thing about the extended warranty, besides never using it!!!! is that if anything does happen they stick you with a diagnostic fee which you actually have to pay before the warranty work will cover the item another bad deal with the extended warranty is that you do not get roadside assistance, for that you have to get their prepaid maintenance plan. that is unfair
It's a matter of perceived value. If I pay $1000 for a factory sound system I expect to get $500 worth of sound system. If I pay $1000 for an extended warranty I expect to get nothing.
at least the original poster inquired about it on prius chat, most people just get sucked into buying it overpriced from the original dealer
if i pay for a toyota package 3, i expect to get some updated bluetooth firmware!!!! or notified of new firmware which i am not, sucks
