I live in California and I know its illegal to tint the front drivers' and passengers' side, but how many of you did/done it? Are the cops strict? How much is the ticket? What if I get a ticket, take it off and I put it back on?
Most people will tint the back windows darker than the front windows. That will give the "illusion" that the car is not really tinted, because of the lighter shade. YMMV on the ticket question, some areas ticket but MOST will just leave you alone. If you get ticketed, it would be a fixaticket, you would just have to remove the tint and get it signed off by court Sheriff. There's usually just a filing fee for the courts and some administration fee for the Sheriff to sign off.
