Does anyone have any in-depth knowledge of the SKS Key Fob functionality? Is it simply an RFID-like device, or does it promote a two-factor authentication link between the key and the car?
I seem to recall reading somewhere that the car transmits a code to the key, the key encrypts it with it's internal 64-bit encryption code and sends it back to the car. Unfortunately I don't have a source - I read it almost 2 years ago when the '04s were just coming out, and I don't remember where... Dave
I do know that when the fob transmits, whether for SKS or remote lock operation, it is rolling code. However, I don't know if the passive mode when you put it in the slot is also rolling code. It doesn't require the use of the fob's batteries, and it does have a separate registration proceedure than the SKS or remote lock function.
