Got my new 2011 Prius Five Saturday..I just love it. I picked-up my mother who also has a 2010 Prius IV that she bought a year or so ago from the same dealership. When we got in my Prius I went to turn on the car and it said the key could not be detected (Fob was in my front pants pocket). After a couple attempts it said to push the brake, put the Fob up to the start button and then press the start button. I did this and it turn right on. My mother happen to have her SKS/Fob key in her purse. I turned off the car she got out and the car started right up. I power off again she got in and the car wouldn't start again unless I put the SKS/Fob next to the start button and went through the steps again. We ran our errands and this happen throughout the day. Anyone else have this issue. Probably not a big deal since 97% of time she not riding in my car..but I thought it was odd behavior. Thoughts?
If this story is true, then your mother's fob is responding to the beacon and causing interference. When you hold your fob up to the button, it no longer uses SKS, but instead uses a short range RFID tag. Tom
Imagine a group get together of 2010+ Prii and no one can start their car. HA! Time to get out the fob and kiss the start button.
I also tried to get in her 2010 Prius to see if my fob would do the same thing to her car but it didn't. Just happening to mine. Very odd. I did notice on p.65 of the Owner's Manual under "conditions affecting operation" that the SKS system "may be affected, preventing the smart key system and wireless remote control from operating properly: When multiple electronic keys are in the vicinity."
My wife always carries our extra FOB in her purse, but she wraps it in aluminum foil. Seems to fix the problem of multiple SKS' for us.
We only have one Prius.....I carry one fob,in front pocket of my pants, my wife carries the other in her purse. We have never had any experiences from this.
This was two different fob's in one Prius (one fob for a 2010 Prius the other for my 2011 Prius). Looks like it might be a known possible issue according to the Prius Manual.
I made a quick video with my cell phone showing the key not detected issue. YouTube - Prius start issue‏
Tom, LOL - I understand now. My wife is always trying to leave her pocketbook in the car and the alarm sounds when I try to lock it. I just might have to have her start wrapping her fob so she can leave it in the car. Dwight
I would think this may be just the right combination of fobs. My wife and a friend ride together a lot. Mine is a 2010 and her friend has a 2008. They have never had a problem with the two different fobs being in either car.
Dwight, I want her to carry the extra FOB when we travel just in case one breaks or gets lost. Someone on PriusChat suggested putting the FOB inside a disk mailer. I assume if that works then wrapping in foil works also. So far, no problems. Regards,
I would be interested in this technology if it disabled the ignition when my mother-in-law got in the car, although it would be even better if it sounded the car alarm when she approached.
