Last night I was showing a friend how special my prius is. As we were walking away from the car, I had the fob in my hand. When I got about 3 feet away from the car, it locked itself. I haven't had that happen before. Is that supposed to happen?
I don't think the car automaticlly locks that quickly (I could be wrong). But I think I remember reading that the car will lock itself after sometime if the SKS key is removed but don't quote me on that
Read your manual. It is the Security System. If you do not get in and start the car it will assume a breakin and relock the doors. My Lexus had the same system. If the thief break in and does not have a fob it will lock him in. Try it. Open the door and let someone else carry the fob away.

This is to protect against accidental unlocks. You don't have to start the car, just simply open a door and close it to keep it from relocking.

It locked when I walked away from it with the "smartkey". I heard it, stopped, turned around and walked back to it. It unlocked. I then walked away again and it relocked. Canadian Package "B", everything but Nav and leather.

Closed the door and walked away without touching the door button or the remote. Came back a few minutes later without the smartkey (left it well enough away that it wouldn't be a factor), and it was still unlocked. Did the car you looked at have the RS3200 package? That adds an autolock, but I don't know if that's a factor under these circumstances.
