Unlike a voice call, an SMS text is somewhat 'private' to avoid others overhearing one side of a conversation without having to 'step outside.' Now if we could just get bars to set this a policy with loud phone callers.

The wife and I eat out probably 3-5 times a week. It's unbelievable how many people have super loud conversations on speaker phone while at a table eating. The funniest thing I ever saw was about 2 weeks ago when we swung into a Cracker Barrel while out running errands. The place was filled with senior citizens and at least half a dozen tables had one person on a phone, using speaker phone at full volume. It was absolutely crazy!! like they were competing on who could be loudest. I'm guessing they were all half deaf and didn't realize what was happening. Was a crazy meal...........it was the first time I ever thought about just leaving before ordering.

    Some do.
You're just hanging out in the wrong bars.... ;)

I wear ipods a lot because I work in fairly loud environments and find the noise canx to be convenient.
I don't go to bars generally speaking unless they are attached to a restaurant and I didn't get to pick.

I've been here in PC for nearly 15 years now - and so I'm fairly talented at ignoring unwanted conversations.....:D

There was a large bar in town here that also had a great kitchen. Because it was large, it was popular for large student gatherings, and because they seemed to have trouble reliably ID-checking said large student gatherings, they'd get sporadically sanctioned with 30-day suspensions of their booze license.

Whenever that happened, it meant 30 days when I could go enjoy their kitchen in peace and quiet.

I suppose by patronizing them in those off periods I was kind of an enabler of their deficient ID-checking efforts.

But, you know, the food was good.

    Hmmmph

My beloved home state must be slipping in my old age.
I remember as a youngin' I'd have to sneak off to KY or OH to get booze because the state came down HARD on establishments that were caught with folks under 21 in a bar or liquor store........ :p
