Just a comment - to thank everyone here at PriusChat for your advice through the Forums. I've been reading now for about 6 weeks, in anticipation of buying our first Prius. We took possession of a 2010 Blizzard Pearl Touring edition last Thursday. Although I find I'm clutching the steering wheel, constantly looking in my rear view mirror, and getting frustrated at the hills I'd never noticed before, I have an average of 53.4mpg (4.4 l/100km) for the first 400 kms. Today I shut off the air conditioning and enjoyed 58.8 mpg on the way home from work. I'm a bit confused by the 3.7 posted city driving rating at the dealership. I feel like I am being VERY careful to monitor every move I make and I'm still not even coming close to Toyota's numbers. Does it ever get tiring constantly trying to keep the mpg's up? I hope someday I can forget about it and enjoy the savings! Thanks again for everyone's great advice. BDWoods.
US epa city is 51 mpg. Canada uses an easier cycle, as do europe and japan. 3.7l/100km would take some slow speed pulse & glide with few stops; not often real world for most. Good work and welcome.
Welcome aboard! I was the same way for the first 3/4 of a year and finally I said forget about it and turn the trip to DTE and just let it go. I did loose a little FE (~2 mpg) but I was a much happier driver. I still am cautious about my driving habits but not as much. Enjoy!
"Welcome to Prius" It will become second nature, but be prepared for a little frustration and sore muscles. I used to find myself leaning forward a bit to help the Prius over the hills. Sometimes I had to take a break and switch on the cruise control to relax. You will get used to it after about a year.
I didn't expect that, but it's so true! I feel like I'm holding the wheel at 10 and 2 and driving like a grandma.... I'm telling the car "come on, come on... just a bit faster...." Who knew. I didn't expect this. Today I drove home in 90 degree weather with the AC off because I wanted to see if I could beat yesterday's number. I didn't! The drive home should be the BEST part of the day - I need to remember that!
