    Good mornin' all,

New PIP owner. Looking for software/iPhone apps that make sense. Specifically looking for a good aid to measuring gas mileage.

    Anyone have suggestions?

I have some Entune questions but will not clutter this post.

The Engine Link app is available for $6.99 at the Apple Store. It requires an OBDII Wifi device to operate and can be found on eBay or Amazon. Try to get a higher quality WiFi device as people have reported problems with the Chinese knockoffs.

If you decide to go this route search on here for OBDII iPhone and there is a complete thread on here with a spreadsheet with PID's that you will need to configure.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish with an "aid to measuring gas mileage" ?

The onboard MPG measurements and displays are fairly accurate......once you find out what the "fudge factor" is.

That is, they almost always are off but the error is consistent and the relative numbers should be pretty much right.

The numbers you end up with are only as good as the built in sensors providing the data; nothing you can do to
improve on that........except the old miles divided by gallons at each fillup.

Thanks JD. One of my coworkers put one on his Fusion Hybrid. I'll look into what he's got on his.

    Rider,

Not sure at this point. I see time based (5 minutes, monthly), real time feed back. I guess I'm looking for easy way to just that "miles divided by gallons" But I would like it over trips to work and back (Multiple trips per tank), trips to visit daughter in Flagstaff (multiple tanks per trip).

I found "Fuely", but am less than impressed.

    Thanks,
    steve

Sometimes a pencil and paper.....or a phone with a calculator and notepad app.....just works out better.

Point IS that any totally mechanized "reader" you come up with is likely to have some inherent error.
The RELATIVE numbers might be pretty accurate but the absolute ones likely won't be.

With my C, you can pretty easily keep track of the mileage for 3 events.
Each trip ODO has it's own MPG number; that's 2.
The third one is the "current trip"......from engine ON to engine OFF......which displays
when looking at the total ODO number.
Of course, all 3 have an error of about +3 MPG.

As jdcollins5 indicates, the EngineLink App is great for monitoring data realtime, but will give a lot of noise for what you're likely asking for.

I use the GasTracker app that can integrate with Fuelly, it does just enough to be helpful if mileage and a few notes will satisfy your need.

Another option is the ScanGaugeII. It has a feature that monitors several parameters such as accumulated MPG, miles and average speed for various events such as per trip (car on and off) and per tankful. It also lets you enter the number of gallons at fillup along with cost and uses these numbers to calculate the results.

I have found that my SGII is about 2% low which is closer than the car's calculation which is about 5% high.

The SGII goes for about $125 now.

Pen/Paper/calculator. Bah, where's the fun in that. :)

Thanks for the heads up on the trip counters. I wasn't aware of that.

    Silver,

Thanks. I picked up the GasTracker app from Fuelly. I think it's perfect in concept. A few annoying bugs,

    Thanks,
    Steve
