Solar power falters in Spain: Is this lights out? - Photovoltaics World

Just received this in my inbox.

No surprise, Spain is in line for massive bailouts, it is faltering and on the edge of bankruptcy. Too bad, they appeared to have viable solutions

Reading more on the topic, there also appears to be mismanagement and perhaps malfeasence , something common in a country like Spain

I think the loss of incentives for Solar Power is the least of the worries for the population of Spain at the moment. Don't know how much you're aware of what's going on this side of the pond, but Ireland is in a right royal pickle and Portugal and Spain are probably likely to follow.

Again, it is a shame about their solar industry as Spain is an ideal country for this technology. Saying that, if anyone wants to give me £5,000 so I can install a 2kwh solar system on my roof I'd be well chuffed.

I was in Ireland a couple of months ago and everyone i spoke to was bemoaning the slow pace of their economic leaders, and were sure they'd have to come begging to europe for some, well, euros.

I can't believe this shit storm is still raging.

Yeah, Eire and Spain (and Portugal too) are up to their eyes in debt. I've been reading about the collapse of the Spanish solar industry for a while now. Defo nuthin' new there. Cabbie, if someone would send me 2K quid for a new solar install I'd be well chuffed. With our incentives here in Colorado, £2K would go a long way.

The situation with Ireland, Germany (the opposite situation), and the other countries in Europe has been in the U.S. news a lot over the past two days, as our (the U.S.) stock market has been going up and down based on the Ireland bailout status. It's a shame that a solar project got caught in this overall financial trouble throughout Europe.

On a brighter note, if you search news.google.com, you will see that there are hundreds of solar projects going on throughout the world right now - and a few of them are LARGE scale.

I have many business contacts in the UK, France, Germany, Norway, Switzerland, Sweden, but none in Spain or Portugal

Very aware of the crushing debt and potential for a repeat of what happened to Iceland

    Anybody remember Iceland?

yup. Westham United suffered quite badly as a result the Iceland situation. I've haven't seen much about it lately. Wonder if it's still the happiest country on earth. My guess is yes, but I'm not sure how things are there now. One the one hand, it's a wee country, but perhaps that makes it more nimble and more likely to recover quickly... or maybe not. I'm not an economist. :D

Appears to be a mismanaged/designed incentive policy which has created the PV boom/bust in Spain. It has happened in other countries, as well.

I read that California will likely be running out of PV incentive money earlier than expected, too, for, for non-profit and commercial installs due to a few miscalculations and incorrect assumptions. Though, at this point with rebates already having dwindled down to $0.05/kWh (next drop is to $0.03/kWh before it goes away completely), one could argue that the end of the incentive program may not have that much of an effect with the recent rapid drop in PV panel prices.
