This looks like a great idea. It looks and works like a giant eye, gathering available light and focusing it on a small area. Using a magnifying glass to concentrate sunlight onto a PV cell isn't new. They are just using an acrylic ball filled with water for the concentrator, and have the PVs on a tracker. The globe may do a better job with diffuse light. The idea sees to be that this lets you use more efficient PVs. They cost more, but now you need less, while also extending the latitudes that PVs can be used. It seems it is possible to have it provide heat in addition to electricity. There are details on their site, and prices. There is even a little iphone charger one. They mention you easily use it as a spot light at night by adding some LEDs. I wonder if you can have it track cars coming up your driveway?
