I'm not sure what happened to my post, but here tis again: Purchased our 2011 Prius new this past August. We currently have 28k miles on it. After driving it for one week, one morning we started it and it sounded like the space shuttle was taking off.....it rattled and bang, clanged and shook for about 2-3 seconds. Then all was fine. About every three weeks or so it would do it again, and again. Upon our next service we told the dealer. He said they were having trouble with a motor mount....so they they replaced it. Couple weeks later same thing.....several weeks after that....again. Now when I tell the dealer they say "well, we'll have to hear it do it before we can fix it.....what !@%@5#!! So, have any of you or are any of you experiencing this? Oh yeah, it's definetly coming from under the hood. It's my guess it's the fan or somewhere related to the fan. Thanks Kirk
There's a TSB on the new prius v (vee wagon) ... and I'm assuming maybe it carries over to other models... it's mostly a cold start thing - but - they have a revised intake manifold for it. the motor mount is the cheap fix first. the engine is misfiring causing it to knock.... because it's an atkinson cycle engine and how they time the valves closing.... it's essentially backfiring into the intake manifold. check with your dealer or call toyota customer service - complain, and if necessary get arbitration involved. if you can - video the noise - there's a youtube video out there that does this... forgive me for not posting the link - but search toyota prius engine knocking - you should find it... show that to your service rep.
i think there is a separate tsb for cold knock on startup. it's a timing issue from when the engine last shut off or something.
Bisco and Mudman......thanks so much....that is exactly what I needed to know. I will make the call tomorrow and rub their noses in it. Your the best!!
