    NASA had a 'single-stage to orbit' program but could not get enough unobtanium, a material with a high enough, strength-to-weight ratio, to make it work. But along the way, NASA did do some launch and return to source tests:

    Unfortunately they lost the test vehicle when one of the landing legs failed to deploy:
