From some of the messages that I've read here, it sounds like the Prius has to be maintained at a dealer to comply with the warranty. Is this true? I like doing my own maintenance since I take the time to do it right.

No, you can have maintenance done by anyone. You might have to show that you have kept up with your maintenance so keep records and receipts. If you do the work, log when you did it, and keep receipts of the materials.

Myself, I am in a dilemma. In order to maintain Tires for Life issued by my dealer, I have to have all maintenance done by them.

Tires for Life? Not sure what that is. All maintenance as in ALL maintenance or just the maintenance required for tires?

At lunch I found the nifty little log book for maintenance, built into the car. I'm tempted to use it, but what happens if the battery needs to be replaced or the like. Is the information lost? Not sure if there's a storage medium or not.
