Thanks to Report: General Motors bringing back mild hybrids next year — Autoblog, Stop-start restart: General Motors' mild hybrids set to return in 2011. Let's hope these mild hybrids deliver a larger fuel economy improvement w/a minimal price premium and dealers try harder to sell them (w/o attitude and dumb markups).
Didn't China recently announce that all new cars would soon be required to be (at least) mild hybrids? If GM wants to prosper in the Chinese market they need to make hybrids, and if they're doing it there, why not put it in US vehicles too?
No doubt there's a tie-in between the Asian market and this announcement. However, any move towards no idling is a good move. Oh sure, they will never get Prius-level mileage but the reduction of idling alone, on a massive scale, is a big thing. Plus, all those "I'd never buy a hybrid" crowd could simply buy a "it doesn't idle" car. Then they roll it into their fleet vehicles, mass transit and commercial delivery vehicles.
